Rockfall in Schöllenen

Continuous measurement monitoring of a rockfall area

Project: 2015, Göschenen, Switzerland
Client: Federal Roads Office ASTRA

On May 20, 2015, a large rockfall occurred in the Schöllenen Gorge between Göschenen and Andermatt in the area of a road gallery, forcing the road through the gorge to be closed for safety reasons.
Above the road, 900 cubic meters of rock had broken away and partially damaged the road gallery. A further 200 cubic meters of rock threatened to break away, endangering the clean-up and rock stabilization measures.
In collaboration with Acht Grad Ost AG, Terradata was able to install two autonomous total stations in the rockfall area within a very short time and monitor the rock sections at risk of falling using measurement technology. This enabled the workers involved in securing the rock face to be warned of even the slightest movements.
